Mission Objectives
- Navigate the swamp to the Forerunner facility
The mission drops you into a fog-choked swamp with zero enemies for the first three minutes — use the calm to orient yourself. Follow the Pelican's crash smoke trail. The environment is intentionally disorienting; use the nav marker aggressively. Do not waste ammo shooting at sounds in the fog.
- Find the Marine fireteam inside the facility
Inside the facility, follow the trail of spent shell casings and Covenant blood smears along the walls. Everything is already dead. The environmental storytelling here is deliberate — read the Marine datapads as you pass them. When you meet the sole surviving Marine, he will give you a shotgun. Take it. You will understand why in about two minutes.
- Survive the Flood introduction
The Flood reveal is one of gaming's most famous tonal shifts. Infection forms pour through the door — do not backpedal in a straight line, they are faster than you. Use the shotgun: one shell deletes an entire cluster of infection forms. Combat forms drop from the ceiling, so watch the motion tracker above and below, not just in front.
- Evacuate the facility through the Flood swarm
The exit is a gauntlet. Combat forms armed with human weapons (shotguns, assault rifles) are the deadliest — they deal the same damage you do. Strafe between pillars, never stop in the open, and use frag grenades to clear doorways before you enter. The sentinel beams that appear near the end will fight the Flood for you; let them soften up rooms before you push in.
Boss Strategy
No dedicated boss fight. The Flood swarm in the final corridor is the true test. Combat forms carrying shotguns will one-shot you on Heroic and Legendary if you stand still. Your survival strategy: sprint through open rooms, stop only where the ceiling is low (Flood leap from high ceilings), and use the shotgun exclusively — no weapon in this mission matches its crowd-control efficiency. Listen for the squelching sound of infection forms; that audio cue means they are behind you. Save one frag grenade for the final door breach.
Collectibles
- Terminal 6 — Inside the first Forerunner structure in the swamp
- Skull: Grunt Birthday Party — On a fallen tree trunk in the central swamp clearing
Secrets & Easter Eggs
- Early shotgun pickup — before meeting the Marine, check the small armory room on the left side of the second floor hallway. A shotgun and two boxes of shells sit on a shelf. Having the shotgun thirty seconds earlier means the first Flood wave cannot overwhelm you before the Marine gives you his.
- Marine survivor squad — there are actually three Marines alive in the facility, not just one. The first two are in a barricaded room behind the elevator. Punch the door lock to free them. They will follow you and their shotgun fire provides excellent covering fire through the Flood corridors. Keep them alive and they will thin the swarm for you.
- Sentinel beam weapon — halfway through the evac, a dead Sentinel drops its beam weapon. This gun is a laser that disintegrates Flood biomass. It overheats fast but has no ammo limit — pulse-fire it in short bursts to keep the heat meter low while you advance.
Pro Tips
- Play on Normal difficulty first to learn the mission layout before attempting Heroic or Legendary.
- Check your corners — the remake features enhanced enemy AI that flanks more aggressively.
- Save heavy weapons for elite encounters; conserve precision weapon ammo for headshots.
