Grunt Minor — Enemy Guide & Strategy
Grunt Minors are the most numerous Covenant infantry and serve as the player's first real test in any Halo campaign. Individually they pose little threat — a single Magnum round to the head dispatches them instantly — but in groups their combined plasma fire can shred shields surprisingly fast. Their psychology is their defining trait: kill the Elite leading them and the survivors scatter, screaming and abandoning their positions.

Overview
Grunt Minors are the most numerous Covenant infantry and serve as the player's first real test in any Halo campaign. Individually they pose little threat — a single Magnum round to the head dispatches them instantly — but in groups their combined plasma fire can shred shields surprisingly fast. Their psychology is their defining trait: kill the Elite leading them and the survivors scatter, screaming and abandoning their positions.
Behavior
Grunt Minors follow Elite commanders and hold loose formations around cover points. When their squad leader dies, they enter a panic state where they drop their weapons and flee in random directions, occasionally throwing blind plasma grenades behind them. On higher difficulties, panicked Grunts will regroup after a few seconds and re-engage if a new Elite arrives. They sleep in dark areas during stealth sections and can be assassinated silently.
Attack Patterns
| Attack | Damage | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Plasma Pistol Shot | 8 | Slow-moving green plasma bolt — easy to strafe-dodge at medium range, deadly in swarms |
| Plasma Grenade Throw | 150 | Throws a sticky plasma grenade when fleeing — will kill any unshielded player on contact |
| Melee Smack | 15 | Weak desperation melee used only when cornered — negligible damage but staggers briefly |
Strengths & Weaknesses
✅ Strengths
- +Weak to: Headshots (one-shot kill with any precision weapon including Magnum)
- +Weak to: Plasma Pistol overcharge (instantly kills unshielded target at close range)
- +Weak to: Needler rounds (supercombine triggers easily on their small hitbox)
- +Weak to: Frag grenades (they rarely dodge explosives)
❌ Weaknesses
- −Resistant to: Body shots (absorb more damage than headshots — always aim for the head)
- −Resistant to: Melee attacks (unnecessary risk for a one-headshot enemy)
Combat Tactics
- Target the head — every precision weapon in Halo CE (Magnum, Sniper, Battle Rifle) drops a Grunt Minor in one shot to the head
- Kill the Elite first to trigger a mass panic, then pick off fleeing Grunts at your leisure while they can't shoot back
- Stick a plasma grenade onto a Grunt in a cluster and the explosion will chain-kill 3-4 nearby enemies
- Don't waste sniper ammo on Grunts unless clearing a path for a vehicle section — Magnum is more ammo-efficient
- On Legendary, never ignore a pack of Grunts — four of them landing consistent plasma shots can kill you in under 3 seconds
Quick Tips
- Prioritize weapons that exploit Grunt Minor's weaknesses.
- Watch for attack telegraphs — most attacks have clear wind-up animations.
- On higher difficulties, grunt minor behavior changes — be prepared to adapt.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the most efficient way to clear a room of Grunts?
Throw a plasma grenade into the center of their group — the blast radius will kill or scatter most of them. Then clean up survivors with Magnum headshots. If an Elite is present, kill the Elite first so the Grunts panic and stop shooting back while you clear them.
Do Grunt Minors behave differently on Legendary difficulty?
Yes — significantly. On Legendary, Grunts are far more aggressive, their plasma bolts travel faster and deal more damage, and they throw grenades with much better accuracy. Most importantly, they stop panicking after only 2-3 seconds and will re-engage, so the window to kill fleeing Grunts is much shorter.
Can I melee a Grunt Minor to save ammo?
You can, but it's not recommended. One Magnum round costs almost nothing in terms of ammo economy and kills them instantly from any range. Meleeing puts you in range of their plasma grenade throws and exposes you to other enemies. Save melee for emergencies when you're completely out of ammo.
How do I deal with Grunts throwing plasma grenades while fleeing?
Listen for the distinct high-pitched 'click' sound of a plasma grenade priming — if you hear it while chasing a fleeing Grunt, immediately change direction. The grenade will land where you were running toward, not where you are. A single strafe-jump sideways will avoid nearly every panic grenade.
What weapons should I NOT use against Grunts?
Avoid using the Sniper Rifle — it's massive overkill per shot and you'll burn through limited ammo. The Assault Rifle is also inefficient at anything beyond close range due to its spread. Rocket Launcher is wasteful unless you're hitting a packed cluster of 5+ Grunts and an Elite simultaneously.
